Weekend retreats: how to find one you can book soon
By Anna VanAgtmael · Updated 11 Oct 2026
Finding a retreat this weekend is hard, because most hosts close bookings well before a retreat starts. A weekend retreat in the next few weeks is much easier to find, and this guide shows how to look for one and what to check before you book.
Can I find a retreat this weekend?
Sometimes, but it is not something to count on. A retreat this weekend needs the host to still be taking bookings, and many hosts stop days or weeks ahead so they can give the venue, the cook and the teachers final numbers.
That is why the date to watch is the booking-closing date, not the start date. It is the last day the host will take bookings, and it usually falls well before the retreat begins. Our guide to how booking closing dates work explains why hosts set them.
On hosted/trips, the list is ordered by the soonest booking-closing date, so the trips whose bookings close first sit at the top. A trip marked Closing soon shows its booking date, never a countdown. If bookings for the weekend you want have shut, you can still look at the next one, or the one after.
What is a weekend retreat?
A weekend retreat is a retreat that lasts a couple of days, usually a Friday evening or Saturday morning to Sunday. You go to one place, stay there and follow the schedule the host has set, then go home.
The host decides what is in it. One weekend retreat might be built around yoga, another around meditation, another around writing or painting. Many are described as a wellness weekend retreat, which usually means a mix of movement, rest and food. Nothing about the length makes it a lesser version of a longer retreat. It is a shorter one, with fewer hours to fill.
What can a weekend retreat fit in?
Less than a week, so expect a simpler plan. There is room for a few guided sessions, shared meals and some free time, but not much more. Hosts tend to pick one theme and keep to it.
Here is an example only, not a real trip, and every host sets their own schedule.
An example weekend (not a real trip):
- Friday evening: arrive, settle in, dinner together and a short welcome
- Saturday morning: a movement or quiet session, then breakfast
- Saturday midday: a guided session on the theme, then lunch
- Saturday afternoon: free time, with an optional walk or workshop
- Saturday evening: dinner and conversation
- Sunday morning: a final session, then a closing circle and goodbyes
Travel eats into a weekend. If the venue is a long way from home, your time there is shorter, so check the journey as well as the schedule.
What kinds of weekend retreat are there?
Most weekend retreats fall into a few familiar kinds. Each has a fuller guide if you want to compare.
- A weekend yoga retreat is built around classes, often with walking, meals and free time. Our guide to choosing a yoga retreat shows how to compare styles, teachers and pace.
- A weekend meditation retreat has sitting and walking practice, and some are partly or fully silent. Our guide to meditation retreats for beginners explains what to expect if it is your first.
- A wellness weekend retreat mixes movement, rest and food. Our guide to wellness retreats explains the usual types.
- A creative weekend retreat gives the days to writing, painting or another craft.
Plenty of retreats blend two of these. Read the daily outline and not just the title.
How do I find a weekend retreat that is still open for booking?
Start with the list, sorted by what closes soonest, then check the dates. On hosted/trips, you can browse retreats and read each trip's status and booking date. The statuses are Early access (bookings not open yet) · Open · Closing soon · Sold out. Some hosts offer a waitlist for a sold out trip, so it is worth checking their site.
A few ways to widen the search:
- Look a few weeks ahead, not just at the next weekend.
- Use the earliest trip sort to see retreats by start date.
- Check retreats a little further from home. A drive or a short train ride may open up more dates.
- Set a trip alert for the kind of retreat and the place you like.
hosted/trips never sees bookings, so it cannot tell you how full a retreat is. If you want to know whether the host still has room, ask them. Nothing listed here is a promise that a retreat is open on a given date, so confirm on the host's own site before you plan around it.
What should I check when I book at short notice?
Check the travel, what to bring and the terms. Booking a retreat soon leaves less time to sort things out, and some hosts have less room to refund close to the start date.
- Travel: how you will get there, when you must arrive, and what happens if you are running late.
- What to bring: ask for a kit list, and find out whether mats, bedding or towels are provided.
- Food: whether meals are included, and whether the host can cater for your needs.
- Rooms: what the options are, and whether there is a single supplement if you want your own.
- Terms: the deposit, when the rest is due, and what happens if you need to cancel. A booking made close to the date often has little time left in which to cancel, so ask before you pay. Our guide to deposits and cancellations explains what to look for.
If you have an injury or a health condition, speak to your own doctor about whether the activities suit you, and tell the host.
What should I ask the host before I book?
Ask what you would want to know if a friend were going. At short notice, a quick message is worth it.
- Is there still room, and when exactly do bookings close?
- What does a typical day look like, and how much of it is free?
- Who leads the sessions, and what is their background?
- Who usually comes, and do beginners join?
- What is included in the price, and what is extra?
- What are the cancellation terms this close to the start?
You book directly with the host on their own site. hosted/trips takes no bookings or payments and no cut of what you pay the host. Before you pay, read how to book safely for a short checklist.
Find a trip
You can browse retreats, sorted by what closes soonest, and read each host's schedule and terms. If nothing fits this weekend, set a trip alert for the kind or the place you like, and you will get an email when a new retreat is listed, so you can plan the next one with more time.
Common questions
Why can't I book a retreat the day before it starts?
Many hosts close bookings earlier, because they need final numbers for the venue, food and teachers. The booking-closing date is set by each host and often falls well before the retreat starts.
What does Closing soon mean on a retreat listing?
It means bookings are still open and the closing date is near. hosted/trips shows the booking date itself, never a countdown, so you can decide at your own pace.
Can a weekend retreat be a silent retreat?
Yes. Some weekend meditation retreats keep quiet for part or all of the time. Read the schedule or ask the host what is expected, and what happens if you need to speak.
Will I get a refund if I cancel a short notice booking?
That depends on the host. Every host sets their own terms, and a booking made close to the start date often has less room to cancel. Ask about the deposit and cancellation terms before you pay.
