What "booking closes" means, and why trips are listed that way
Updated 4 Oct 2026
"Booking closes" is the last date the host will take bookings for a trip. On hosted/trips, trips are listed with the soonest booking-closing date first, because that's the date you actually have to decide by.
What booking closes means
A trip happens on one date, but booking usually stops well before that. Hosts close bookings early for all sorts of reasons. They may need final numbers for the venue, the cook or the boat. They may need time to send kit lists or arrange transfers. A cruise or a group trip may have its own deadlines set by the people the host is booking with.
So the date that matters for you isn't always when the trip starts. It's when you can no longer get on it. Two trips in the same month can close for bookings weeks apart.
The booking-closing date on hosted/trips comes from the host. If you're unsure, check it on the host's own site, since that's where you book and their terms are the ones that apply.
Why the list is ordered this way
Sorting by trip date sounds sensible, but it can hide a trip that starts later and closes sooner. You'd scroll past it, come back next month, and find bookings already shut.
Sorting by the soonest booking-closing date puts the decisions you need to make first at the top. Nothing you'd want closes before you've seen it.
You can re-sort the list any time:
- Closing soonest, the default
- Earliest trip, by trip date, soonest first
- Latest trip, by trip date, furthest out first
- Price, low to high or high to low
Nobody can pay to move up the list. Sponsored spots are always labeled, and the regular list is never for sale.
What each status means
Every trip shows one status so you can see where it stands at a glance.
Early access
Bookings aren't open yet. The trip is real and the host has shared it early, so you can read about it, plan around the dates and be ready when booking opens. Check the host's site for how they'll let people know.
Open
The host is taking bookings. Read the trip page, ask any questions, and book with the host on their own site when you're ready.
Closing soon
Bookings are still open, and the closing date is near. We show the booking date itself, never a countdown. We'd rather give you the fact and let you decide at your own pace.
Sold out
The host isn't taking more bookings. Some hosts offer a waitlist, so it's worth checking their site if you had your heart set on it.
What we don't show
You won't see "only 2 spots left" on hostedtrips. We never see bookings, because you book with the host directly, so we don't show spot counts. If you want to know how full a trip is, ask the host.
Trip ideas you can't book yet
Some listings are marked Gauging interest. These are trip ideas hosts are testing before they commit to running them, so there's no booking date yet. Tell the host you're interested, and you'll hear only if it goes ahead. Trip ideas live on their own ideas page.
If nothing fits right now, set up a trip alert. You'll get an email when a new trip of the kind, theme or place you chose is listed, so you hear about it well before booking closes.
A few things to check before the date
Booking closing is one deadline. There may be others. Before you book, ask the host:
- When is the deposit due, and when is the rest?
- What happens if you need to cancel, and does that change as the trip gets closer?
- Is there a separate deadline for things like room choices, dietary needs or travel details?
Every host sets their own terms, so the answers will vary. There's a longer list in questions to ask a host.
